Hazardous Waste and Electronic Waste Collection

The Household Hazardous Waste and Electronic Waste collection program provides for proper disposal of household hazardous materials.  This program also provides Redlands Fire Department personnel with the proper training and equipment to mitigate a leak, spill or other release of hazardous or toxic materials in our jurisdiction.  Approximately 3600 citizens use this facility each year. The Fire Department in partnership with the San Bernardino County Fire Department is responsible for operation of the program, which includes:

  • Operate and Maintain the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Site.
  • Collect, categorize, lab pack and store Household Hazardous Waste for proper disposal.
  • Collection of electronic waste under CalRecycle guidelines.
  • Provide training and equipment to operate an Emergency Hazardous Material Response Team.

HOME GENERATED SHARPS DISPOSAL PROGRAM

The importance of proper disposal of home generated medical sharps waste is becoming more evident each day as more and more hypodermic needles and other medical waste is found in the waste stream daily by City solid waste workers.

The City of Redlands is proud to be one of only a few cities in California who offer a program to help residents responsibly dispose of needles, syringes, lancets and other sharp objects used in the personal administration of prescription medications at home.

The City of Redlands Home Generated Sharps Disposal Program is free of charge and offered to Redlands Residents. Redlands Fire Station 261 will accept sharps containers for proper disposal and provide a empty container for future use.

HOW IT WORKS
Free sharps containers are available to City of Redlands residents ONLY, proof of residency is required. When your sharps container is approximately ¾ full take it to Redlands Fire Station 261 and exchange it for an empty container. This program is available daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sharps DOs and DON’Ts
  • DO always place used needles, syringes, and lancets into an approved sharps container immediately after use.
  • DO keep sharps containers in a child and animal-proof area.
  • DON’T try to bend or break the needle or syringe.
  • DON’T put the cap back on the needle.
  • DON’T put sharps in soda cans or bottles, juice bottles, glass containers, or milk cartons.
  • DON’T put sharps containers or loose sharps into your trash or recycling bin.
  • DON’T flush needles or lancets down the toilet.
  • DON’T mix other hazardous waste products with your needles.
