Supporting those who support a safe Redlands…
The members of the Community Analysis and Technology Unit provide strategic, tactical and operational support for decision-making, both for the Department and community, and employ technology to prevent, intervene and suppress crime. These efforts are accomplished within the scope of three primary efforts: Community Analysis, High Technology Crime Investigations, and the East Valley COMPASS Initiative.
Community Analysis is provided by Crime Analysts Sheila Harbert and Raquel Perez, who analyze police and community data to support initiatives, pursue Department priorities, and fulfill requests from throughout the community. They employ CrimeView and ArcView software to meet administrative and management demands, and provide direct support through identifying crime trends and patterns. When a crime is witnessed, the pair use specialized software to create composite sketches, and produce wanted bulletins that are distributed to the community and other law enforcement agencies.
The East Valley COMPASS (Community Analysis, Mapping and Planning for Safety Strategies) initiative is a federally-funded effort that employs geographic information systems (GIS) technology from ESRI to analyze and deliver data to the public through Citizen COMPASS, a web-based crime mapping tool. COMPASS also serves as a research resource in partnership with the University of Redlands and Department of Justice, and combines shared data in support of broader initiatives like Parole and Probation’s GPS initiatives.
