AUTOMATED CURBSIDE RECYCLING PROGRAM
The City of Redlands distributed 90-gallon containers for automated recycling to over 16,000 single-family residences during May of 2002. The City anticipates increasing the amount of waste that is recycled due to increased convenience of providing residents with wheeled carts. Materials acceptable for recycling and materials that contaminate your recycling cart are listed below. You can also click here to download and print out your own copy of our curbside recycling program brochure.

"All waste and pollution are lost profit."
- Bill Coors
Acceptable materials are:
Glass, plastic containers (numbers 1 - 7), tin and aluminum products, cardboard and all paper products. CARDBOARD MUST ALWAYS BE BROKEN DOWN.
Unacceptable materials are:
Cardboard with wax coating, cardboard or paper product with food waste on them, Styrofoam plates, packing peanuts or packaging, plastic lawn furniture, swimming pool covers, toys, hoses and household goods.
Why should your business participate?
As a business leader, your participation is critical to achieving the waste diversion goals set for our City. But beyond helping attain goals mandated by state law, there are tangible benefits in adopting waste reduction / recycling programs. These include:
- Producing less trash through waste reductions and recycling may lower your solid waste cost by decreasing the size of your refuse bin or lowering the number of service days.
- Waste reduction usually results in lower procurement costs. For example, using double-sided copies reduces the demand for paper, and refilling ink jet cartridges instead of buying new ones is less expensive. Programs like these tend to build awareness and change behavior over time, sometimes into new innovations.
- Recycling programs can become power marketing tools. The public is highly receptive to the idea of recycling, as demonstrated by the high recycling rate attained in the City's curbside program. Businesses which publicize their recycling measures find they are able to effectively project their social responsibility, with all that implies for the bottom line.
