Paramedics rescue choking infant

6/29/2009 - Paramedics rescue choking infant

An 8-month old choking victim is expected to make a complete recovery after Redlands paramedics responded to the 900 block of West Fern Avenue Sunday afternoon.

Shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday, June 28, firefighters responded to a report of an infant choking. They arrived to find the baby’s mother in the front yard of the home holding the infant. The child’s airway was obstructed by what was believed to be a piece of candy and her lips and extremities were turning blue.

Paramedics placed the child on a high oxygen flow and began working to clear her airway.  The girl was transported by ambulance to Loma Linda University Medical Center’s Pediatric Emergency Room.

While enroute to the hospital, paramedics were able to clear the girl’s airway. Her condition began to improve immediately and her color had returned to normal by the time the ambulance reached the hospital.

Doctors indicated the child will likely suffer no long-term damage and should make a full recovery.
