Motor home catches fire on I-10, snarling afternoon traffic

7/1/2009 - Motor home catches fire on I-10, snarling afternoon traffic

A conversion van that caught fire on Interstate 10 Tuesday afternoon sent a large plume of smoke into the air that was visible throughout the local area before Redlands firefighters extinguished the blaze.

The 2 p.m. fire occurred at the Palm Avenue overpass on the westbound Interstate 10 and snarled traffic in both directions as well as on local surface streets.

The fire reportedly started in the engine compartment of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter conversion van and quickly spread throughout the vehicle. At one point, the flames ignited the onboard propane tank, releasing a large ball of flame that temporarily forced firefighters back.

Ten Redlands firefighters responded to the blaze which was controlled within 15 minutes.

No one was injured. The damage to the vehicle and contents was estimated at $95,000.
