Local hair salon honored for efforts to help the environment
11/13/2009 - Local hair salon honored for efforts to help the environment
Evans & Co., a local hair salon, received the Mayor’s Green Action Award for their efforts to reduce their own carbon footprint and aid the environment even outside of their local community.
Green Action awards are an initiative started by Mayor Jon Harrison to honor individuals and organizations around the City who have implemented programs to reduce their impact on the environment and contribute to a sustainable future for the City.
Mayor Harrison presented the award to Evans & Co. owner Cheryl Evans at the salon at 101 S. Sixth St.
In addition to remodeling the business with energy efficient construction materials, Evans & Co. encourages customers to recycle empty beauty product containers. The salon gives customers discounts on products bought at the shop when they return the empty containers for recycling.
Evans & Co. is also involved in more global environmentalism through A Matter of Trust. Evans & Co. collects hair clippings and ships them to the environmental group which uses the clippings to manufacture oil spill hair mats.
Because hair naturally absorbs oil, the mats are efficient at soaking up emergency oil spills and can be used for other environmentally friendly applications. For more information on A Matter of Trust, visit their website at www.amatteroftrust.org.
